John Legend to Teach Songwriting on MasterClass!
John Legend will instruct a songwriting session on MasterClass, the online platform where anyone can learn from the greatest in the world across a variety of areas. Legend will walk students through every step of his songwriting process in his seminar, providing a framework for doing the same and creating with a purpose. Legend will also give audience members an inside peek at how his song "Free," which he debuted at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in April, was written. The course is now only accessible through MasterClass, where annual customers have unrestricted access to all 150+ professors.
"John's ability to craft songs that resonate in both intimate moments and timely movements makes him one of the most accomplished songwriters of the time," said David Rogier, founder and CEO of MasterClass. "In his class, he brings members into his songwriting process, teaching them how to use their own experiences to write songs that have the ability to change the world."
Legend instructs students in his workshop on how to use music to capture moments in time, express emotions, and spark movements. He demonstrates how he creates melodies for songs using mumbling tracks and how he arranges songs to make a story using examples from his hit songs "All of Me," "Again," and "Dope." He will also teach the group's members the value of good collaboration, how to mix musical genres, and how to record backing voices. He will also offer advice on how to perform live. Legend concludes the lesson with a stirring rendition of "Free" with a gospel choir after walking participants through the song's composition.
John Legend, a multi-platinum recording artist, is the first Black man to receive the EGOT after winning 12 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, and an Emmy Award. Legend has published seven well-received albums over the course of his career; his eighth studio album, Legend, will be released on September 9. The second stage of Legend's popular "Love in Las Vegas" residency, which runs through October at the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, opened last weekend. Legend will also make a comeback this fall to The Voice on NBC, where he has been a coach since 2019.
